This year I was asked by Derwent pencils to produce a drawing
using their 'Graphic' range of pencils. There is a possibility that they will use this drawing to promote the pencils. Exciting
stuff and an opportunity I didn't want to miss! I decided to use the same view through the 'Halifax Building Society'
buildings which appears on my 'Gallery' page in colour and attempt to re-create this in monochrome using the required grades
of pencil.
I was a little apprehensive about using the particular grades of 'Graphics'
pencils that Derwent required, (B and H through to 9H)as they are harder and finer than I normally use. I was not sure I could
achieve the depth of tone I normally like to have. However, the first corner is complete and I am reasonably satisfied.
Having already drawn this view using colour doesn't make it easier to
complete using only graphite! Trying to achieve the variation in tone is quite difficult at times. This along with the complex
assortment of angles and perspectives presents quite a task.

| Much of the detail occurs in the centre of this drawing. |
It is almost a relief to get round to the heart
of the picture which has the bulk of the detail. Again, the complex perspectives and angles are a challenge. However, I
am finding that the pencils are great for the fine detail and give me much firmer edges and lines.
The last stretch has been quite concentrated. Often when I am close
to finishing a drawing and the end is in sight, I tend to work for longer spells than I should! There is always a feeling
of excitement when the last few pencil strokes are added. I am happy with the results. It has been quite a challenge but I
feel I have done a fairly good job. I hope Derwent feel the same!
